In April 2025, the MV Glengyle, a bulk carrier chartered by Uni‑Asia, collided with the KMTC Surabaya, a container ship, on the Lòng Tàu River in southern Vietnam, near the entrance to Ho Chi Minh City port. The accident damaged the Glengyle’s hull, resulting in an oil spill, the exact quantity of which has not been disclosed.
ITOPF once again mobilized our team to coordinate the cleanup operations with the local partner SOS Environnement.
Our missions included:
Assessing the extent of the pollution through surveys
Proposing an action plan to the local authorities
Coordinating the cleanup operations, including logistics for equipment and personnel
The pollution primarily affected mangrove forests within the UNESCO‑listed Cần Giờ Biosphere Reserve, as well as the villages of An Thới Đông, Tam Thôn Hiệp, and Long Hòa in Cần Giờ province.
These ecologically sensitive and inhabited areas were directly threatened by the spilled oil, making the rapid deployment of containment and recovery measures crucial to protect both the fragile ecosystem and the local communities.
We would like to sincerely thank all of our partners who supported us throughout this operation:
Gard AS (P&I), and especially Tonje Castberg for her trust
ITOPF (David Campion, Sam Durrance, Shahbaz Iftikharezaman & Amy Jewell)
SOS Environnement, our local partner (Phạm Văn Sơn, Lê Quang Phục, and all their operators
The government and people of Vietnam for welcoming us with great kindness
